The name hippopotamus means river horse, but
in fact the hippo is related to the PIG.
It is a huge, heavy animal that lives in
Africa. Of all land animals, only the elephant
is larger in size. Hippopotamuses live near
rivers and lakes and they spend most of their
time in water. In spite of their fearsome
looking jaws, they only eat plant food.
These animals are not usually dangerous if
left alone, but they can inflict serious
wounds with slashes from the tusks found in
their lower jaw.
